Basics of LED (in brief)

Light Emitting Diode is known as LED. Mainly LED works using semiconductor that is manipulated to have positively charged atoms. It does mean there are spaces without electrons. The spaces are called electron holes. The electron holes are getting filled when an electrical charge passes through the semiconductor. Resulting in the emission of photons and creating energy, so that immediately lights are visible. 

LED Primary Color

If we wanted to know the primary color of LED, it originally an LED could light up in only one color. But in modern improvement it options can display up to six colors with shades in between. Shades of colors are useful for a small area or in a tight space in particular. LED color depends on the level of energy involved in the light we see. To attract the consumers Lighting manufacturers are always taking initiative to make new different types of light. As such they use different materials for the semiconductors to control the energy. In order to develop the use of different materials manufacturers have taken enough time. Therefore the range of colors supported by LEDs has extended  over time to this effect.

How LED Lights Produce and Change different color?

As we have discussed above that LEDs produce different colors by using various materials. And these materials produce photons and different wavelengths. In a very automotive systematic way, those individual wavelengths appear as light of different colors, which we can see. 

By using the materials of LEDs able to handle the adequate levels of electricity, heat and humidity. Also to use the Aluminum Indium Gallium Phosphide (AIInGaP) materials system create high-brightness red and amber LEDs. At the same time, blue, green and cyan LEDs use the Indium Gallium Nitride (In GaN) system.

 The LEDs  produce different colors together with AIInGaP and InGaN cover up almost the entire light spectrum and with a gap at green-yellow and yellow. In the same device one method of achieving a larger spectrum of colors is to mix different colors of LEDs.  

Very surprisingly, combining 3 colors as Red, Green and Blue (RGB) in a single LED device, like a lighting fixture or multi-chip LED, and controlling their relative intensities can produce and change millions of colors. In addition to that combining Red, Green, and Blue in equal amounts produces white light as well. 

Finally, by adjusting the electric current to such an extent that it only flows through 2 diodes, and resulting 3 additional colors can be created. There are tricks to passing current through the Red and Blue diodes that create magenta, Red and Green make Yellow, and blue and green produce Cyan.

How to change the color of an led light

There are some LED lights that can change color, but it is not at all normally the LED that changes color.  Actually an LED light changes color, while a different colored diode inside emits the light. This is very amazing, how do LED lights change color automatically. There are two methods we can share with you as follows:

Method – 1:  Color changing using Several LED Colors

A LED essentially needs a semiconductor that can release energy in the form of light. It is obviously true that always the light color depends on the material of the semiconductor. Such as a standard color changing LED with a red, blue and green LED inside the same Casing. Through a microcontroller, which is also inside the casing LED receives a current.

While an electrical current goes to a single LED in this Casing, it gives off either red, blue or green. Whereas an electrical current goes two LEDs, it provides results in a color combination like purple, pink, yellow and so on. This is generally referred to as LED color temperature.

Method – 2:  Color changing through alternating current

The other system color changes LED lights through using alternating electric currents. If a lower electrical current is sent to the colored LED then the shade will change. As such, 100% brightness through a red LED gives off the color red. On the other hand lowering brightness to only 50% gives the pink color.

It may be mentioned that other types of bulbs need a few seconds to reach full brightness. Whereas an LED is opposite, it comes full brightness instantly and this is one of the benefits of LED lighting.

What is the Difference between Color & Color Temperature?

Sometimes people may confuse the definition between Color and Color Temperature. This confusion is not unusual because of the similarity sound of the words.  Prior to going into details, it is wise to clarify in between the two.

Color: Meaning of Color refers to the color of light that diodes produce. This color could be any color of the rainbow. Light comes from the sun in waves. Waves are shorter and longer. Usually we see the waves as the colors of the rainbow. Colors depend on wavelength. Red has the longest and violet has the shortest wavelength. Together with all wavelengths make the color white. We may think white is not color. But that is not true at all. Shine white light through water. While white light shines through water, it makes a rainbow. This Color visibility we call spectrum.

Color Temperature:  Whereas, Color Temperature refers to the shade of white light produced. The white lights can produce warmer or cooler visual effects. This visual effect is measured in degrees of Kelvin. Name of Kelvin (scale) was recognized and established in the name of a British physician Lord Kelvin. In his research he discovered Color changes in heated metals. Lord Kelvin found in research that increases the temperature of a black material, its changes from red to yellow and eventually diverted blue in color.

The Air temperature is not measured in Celsius or Fahrenheit. It is measured by Kelvin scale. The warm color temperatures measure Low Kelvin and cool color temperatures determine High Kelvin. The measurement of scale is determined to run from 0 – 10,000K. Whereas, due to improvement of brightness and intensity most of the LEDs will be between 2,000 and 6500K as measured.       

How to change color temperature of led lights

It is rather simple to adjust the color of LED light bulbs. Changing color temperature is not so easy. Because LEDs are manufactured to produce specific Kelvin scales of colors. It does mean this is a completely in-made system. Once they are constructed with fixing exact color temperature, this cannot be changed.

The warm LED lights have a relaxing impact. At the same time blue light helps to keep us concentrating and alert. The impact of lighting we discussed time and again in our other articles.  Therefore, this is embarrassing for using two types of lighting impact in some areas of home.

However, fortunately this is good news for all of us that the manufacturers come forward to solve the matter.
